Product discovery
Site search plus browsing by department, brand and scale to help customers narrow a specialist catalogue.
Model Depot UK is a real ecommerce website I built for a UK model retailer. This page focuses on what can be verified on the live site today — not invented traffic figures, made-up conversion percentages or fake client claims.

Site search plus browsing by department, brand and scale to help customers narrow a specialist catalogue.
Saved items, order history and basket access are surfaced directly in the main shopping experience.
A dedicated compare feature gives shoppers another way to evaluate products rather than forcing one-item-at-a-time browsing.
A purpose-built discovery path for people who know roughly what they want but need help finding an appropriate model.
Specialist content and discovery features give returning hobbyists more to use than a conventional shop catalogue.
Order tracking, shipping information, returns information and contact routes are part of the customer journey.
Model Depot UK sells plastic model kits, paints, tools and modelling accessories. The catalogue spans aircraft, military vehicles, cars, motorcycles, naval subjects, figures, fantasy products and supplies, with brands including Airfix, Tamiya, Aoshima, Hasegawa and Revell.
That means the website has to do more than look polished. Customers need practical ways to move through products by the attributes that matter to model builders — subject, manufacturer and scale — while still making new arrivals and individual products easy to reach.
The live site supports direct search, broad “shop all” browsing, departments, brand browsing and scale browsing. It also exposes dedicated features such as Kit Finder, Collector Hub and product comparison.
That structure matters for a specialist retailer because different shoppers arrive with different levels of certainty. One person may search a specific item number; another may only know they want a 1:72 aircraft kit. The interface gives both users a route forward.
The site places delivery messaging, customer feedback, saved items, orders, basket access, tracking, shipping information, returns, privacy, terms and contact information around the shopping experience. Checkout is presented as secure and powered by PayPal.
I have deliberately not attached a fabricated conversion uplift, revenue figure or SEO percentage to this case study. If verified analytics become available later, measurable outcomes can be added as a separate results section.
Model Depot UK also contains a substantial modelling guide library covering beginner topics such as choosing a first kit, build workflow, tools, cutting and cleaning parts, glues, paints, brush painting, masking, decals, sanding, airbrushing, clear coats, weathering and model scales.
This gives the shop useful informational content around the same subject area as its products, while helping less experienced customers understand what they need to get started.
The storefront runs on a custom PHP and MySQL build rather than an off-the-shelf platform. Behind it sits a bespoke admin panel for the shop owner: products can be created with up to twenty staged photos per draft, every upload is verified server-side before a product can be saved, and stock quantities and a configurable low-stock threshold drive the badges customers see.
For search and advertising the site generates its own XML sitemap and a Google Merchant Center product feed, emits Product, Offer, Breadcrumb, ItemList and SearchAction structured data, and fires GA4 ecommerce events for product views, add-to-basket and purchase. Checkout is handled by PayPal with instant payment notification, and the site enforces HTTPS-only sessions and CSRF protection on forms.
Open Model Depot UK and use the search, categories, customer tools and specialist browsing features directly.
